Joy Virata:After surviving COVID-19

Image
MANILA -- After recovering from COVID-19, theater stalwart Joy Virata lent her voice to the Department of Health's (DOH) social media campaign amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The former artistic director of Repertory Philippines was quoted in a post on the DOH Facebook page on Monday as part of the agency's "Survivors Speak" campaign. According to Virata, she still does not know how or when she got infected by the virus, but she is certain about the importance of three things that will help prevent it from spreading.  "There is still a lot that is not known about this virus. But what is definite is that there are three simple rules that, if followed strictly by everyone, could lick this pest: wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer, strictly observe physical distancing, and wear a mask to protect others and hope everyone wears a mask to protect you," she said. It was last April when Virata  wrote  about her battle against the novel coronavirus which also aff...

Seth Godin-things that I learned from Him

Image
Last year I wrote an article saying that mentors are overrated and that you should pursue finding  heroes  instead. Mentors are scarce; heroes are abundant. Mentors have to spend time with you; heroes don’t even have to know you exist. Mentors have limited advice (usually, due to time constraints), whereas you can watch heroes all day on YouTube. That’s something I learned from my ‘hero,’ Seth Godin. Here are ten other things I’ve learned from watching, reading, and consuming as much content as humanly possible created with, for, or by him. The lessons are going to be short, and I’ll provide links to where I got them. Let’s go! #1. Everyone is an artist We have no other option. Seth Godin is the author of more than 15 best-sellers. His books were translated into more than 35 languages. I’ve read many, but not all of them. ‘Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? ’  is   my favorite one. In the book, he describes the world in which we live to...

Interview: Meryl Streep Up Close

Image
Meryl Streep photographed by Michael Thompson, styled by Camilla Nickerson. Hair by Garren for Garren New York/L’Oréal Paris; makeup by Gucci Westman for Lancôme; manicure by Sheryl Bailey for Jed Root. Fashion assistant: Erin Simon. Mrs. Streep, do you like to cook at home? Some nights I like it, some nights I don’t. I’ve started meals and then just said, “Oh God!” and thrown it in the sink. I have done that and said, “We’re getting pizza, that’s it.” And then I’ll go lie down in my room in a funk.  When my children were very young and I was working I had someone cooking for me. I don’t have a cook now, I haven’t had one for a number of years and I do it myself. But when they were all little it was hard to pay attention to everyone’s homework at the end of the day and make dinner. So what is your specialty today? Lately I’ve been making a lot of pasta. It’s easy. There are unusual tastes that you can combine. I cook because my kids like a certain kind of thing and then they want i...
